Behind the Bookshelf at Clara's Little Library
When Clara was born, I knew one thing with absolute certainty: she would grow up speaking Portuguese. Not just because it's our language but because language is how she would know her grandparents, feel at home in Portugal, and carry her heritage with her wherever she goes.
Finding Portuguese children's books in the UK turned out to be far harder than I ever expected. What should have been simple and joyful became a cycle of searching online, coming up empty, and making trips back to Portugal just to fill her bookshelf. I often wondered how many other bilingual parents were quietly struggling with the same thing.
That's when Clara's Little Library came to life. Not as some grand business plan but as a heartfelt answer to a problem I knew we weren't alone in facing.
Our mission
To make bilingual and native language children's books genuinely accessible in the UK so no child grows up without stories in the language that connects them to their culture, their family, and their roots.
Our vision
A world where every child's bookshelf reflects who they are, whatever language they speak, wherever they call home.
Our values
Accessibility
Native language books shouldn't be this hard to find, we know, because we looked too.
That's why we're here to make sure they reach you, wherever you are.
Authenticity
Every book we stock is chosen because it genuinely matters to us, from language, to identity, to childhood.
We pick each collection thinking of your child, just like we thought of Clara.
Community
Whether your little one's language is Arabic, Portuguese, Polish, or beyond, you belong here.
We're all just parents trying to give our children the wonderful, special gift of another language.
Representation
Every child deserves to see their language and identity reflected on their bookshelf.
Because when a child finds a book that speaks their language, they engage more, they learn faster and with the right books, you can support them every step of the way.
